The name itself comes from the Latin granatum, meaning pomegranate seed, a reference to the gemstone's vivid crimson hue and rounded form. Rarity and Formation
Garnet is not a single mineral but a family of closely related silicate minerals that share the same crystal structure. The deep red variety most people recognize is called pyrope or almandine, but garnet also occurs in rich orange (spessartine), vivid green (tsavorite and demantoid), pale pink (rhodolite), and even the extraordinary color-change garnet, which shifts from green in daylight to red under incandescent light.
While red garnets are found on every continent and remain relatively accessible, the rarer varieties command serious attention. Tsavorite, a bright emerald-green garnet discovered in the borderlands of Kenya and Tanzania in the 1960s, is considered one of the finest green gemstones in the world. Demantoid garnet from Russia's Ural Mountains has a fire that exceeds even diamond, making it among the most prized collector stones in existence. Color-change garnet, sourced mainly from East Africa and Madagascar, is exceptionally rare.
