Rarity and Formation
Rose quartz belongs to the quartz family, one of the most abundant mineral groups on Earth, but the conditions that produce truly fine rose quartz with consistent, saturated color and good transparency are less common than the stone's widespread availability might suggest.
The pink color comes from traces of titanium, iron, or manganese within the silicon dioxide crystal structure. In its most abundant form, rose quartz is found in massive deposits and has a characteristically soft, milky quality. Star rose quartz, which displays a six-rayed asterism when cut into a cabochon, is considerably rarer and highly valued.
Brazil is the world's primary source of rose quartz, particularly the mines of Minas Gerais and Bahia. Fine material also comes from Madagascar, South Africa, India, and the United States. The most desirable specimens combine a warm, medium pink tone with good translucency and a silky internal light.
