Larimar is found in only one place on earth: a single mountain in the Dominican Republic, where the stone forms in volcanic rock. Its turquoise-blue colouring, streaked with white and pale grey, makes it immediately recognisable, and its rarity means that high-quality specimens are genuinely difficult to source. It is associated with calm communication, clarity, and the serene energy of the sea. Labradorite, by contrast, is found in Canada, Finland, Madagascar, and Russia, and its defining characteristic is a phenomenon called labradorescence: an internal optical effect created by light interacting with the stone's layered internal structure. The result is a colour shift that moves through blue, green, gold, and violet depending on the viewing angle, and it is entirely natural, requiring no treatment.
