Tanzanite: Rarer Than Diamonds

Tanzanite is found in a single location on earth: a small mining area near the town of Mererani in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Geologists estimate that the conditions required to form tanzanite occurred only once in the earth's history, approximately 585 million years ago, making it a genuinely finite resource. It was discovered in 1967, which makes it one of the youngest gemstones in the commercial world, and it became one of the most sought-after stones almost immediately upon its introduction to international markets. Its pleochroism, the ability to display different colours from different angles, means that tanzanite is never quite the same twice. In 2 mm square-cut form, the colour shifts are subtle but visible, giving the bracelet a life and depth that photographs cannot fully capture.
