Emerald has been one of the most prized gemstones in the world for at least four thousand years. The ancient Egyptians mined emeralds in the Eastern Desert as early as 1500 BCE, and the stone appears in the jewellery of pharaohs, the crowns of European royalty, and the collections of every significant gem culture in history. Today the finest emeralds come from Colombia, particularly the Muzo and Chivor mines, with notable production also in Zambia, Brazil, and Zimbabwe. The stone's deep green colouring comes from trace amounts of chromium and vanadium within the beryl crystal structure, and the finest specimens carry a warmth that distinguishes them clearly from the cooler green of tsavorite or chrome diopside. Emerald has been associated with growth, abundance, renewal, and the healing of the heart in every tradition that has known it.
