KALEA means joy and happiness in Hawaiian, and iolite in cube format brings a particular kind of joy: the slow, satisfying kind that comes from looking at something beautiful and realising it keeps revealing itself differently. AAA-grade iolite cube beads at 4 mm alternate with 3 mm gold-plated brass cube accents along the strand, each iolite bead displaying its characteristic pleochroism, shifting between deep indigo, violet, and pale grey-blue depending on the angle of light. At 40 cm with a 4 cm extension, this necklace is one of those pieces that changes with the wearer's movement in a way that photographs cannot capture.

Iolite: A Stone That Navigates

Ancient Viking navigators used thin slices of iolite as a polarising filter to locate the sun on overcast days, and the stone's capacity to reveal something hidden in the light feels entirely appropriate to what it does aesthetically. Its pleochroism, the ability to display different colours from different viewing angles, is unique to iolite in this particular way, and the finest specimens are found in Sri Lanka, India, and Tanzania. In cube format, the multiple flat faces of each bead allow the colour shifts to be seen from several angles simultaneously, giving the necklace a visual complexity that a round bead in the same stone would not achieve.
