Larimar: A Stone Found in One Place on Earth

Larimar is a blue variety of the mineral pectolite, found in only one location in the world: a single mountain in the Barahona province of the Dominican Republic. It was discovered in 1974 by a Dominican geologist and named by combining the name of his daughter, Larissa, with the Spanish word for sea, mar. Its soft turquoise-blue colouring, streaked with white and pale grey patterns, is created by the substitution of copper for calcium in the mineral structure, and the finest specimens have a depth and translucency that makes them look almost liquid. Larimar is associated with calm communication, clarity, and the serene, flowing energy of the ocean, and it is considered one of the rarest gemstones in the world due to the strictly limited geographic source of its supply.
