Iolite has been used by human beings for far longer than most people realise. Its name comes from the Greek word for violet, and the finest specimens are found in Sri Lanka, India, and Tanzania. Where most stones have one colour, iolite has three: it can appear deep indigo, pale blue-grey, or near-colourless depending on the direction from which it is observed.
