Garnet is one of the oldest known gemstones, found in jewellery and burial objects dating back over five thousand years across ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. The name comes from the Latin granatus, meaning seed, a reference to the pomegranate whose deep red seeds the stone resembles. Significant deposits exist in India, Africa, the United States, and Brazil, and the stone occurs in a range of colours beyond the familiar deep red, though it is the red that has been carried as a talisman of courage, vitality, protection, and passionate grounded energy across civilisations for millennia.
