The finest specimens come from the Mogok Valley in Myanmar, where the stone has been mined for over eight centuries and where the chromium content of the local geology produces the warm, slightly fluorescent red known as pigeon's blood that defines the highest-quality rubies in the world. Significant sources also exist in Mozambique, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. With a Mohs hardness of 9, ruby is the second hardest natural substance after diamond, which means it is as durable as it is beautiful.
